LASIK Surgery FAQ

LASIK PROCEDURE:

Are there limits to how much refractive error can be corrected?
Yes, there are. The limits for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism depend on many factors, especially the thickness of your cornea. This can only be determined at your consultation.

How do I know if I am suitable for LASIK?
To determine your suitability for LASIK you will need to come in for an initial consultation in our rooms in Nedlands. At this consultation we will check your refraction and look at the general health of your eyes. We will discuss the procedure and what results you can expect. If you would like to check your suitability or if you have other questions please contact us on (08) 9381 0758.

Why do contact lenses need to be left out before the surgery?
Contact lenses may alter the natural curvature of the cornea. To have accurate results we need to know what the natural curvature of the cornea is, thus it is essential that lenses are left out prior to consultation and surgery.

How long does the surgery take?
The surgery itself takes 15-20 minutes per eye but you will be here for about 90 minutes.

How much time will I need off work?
Most patients are able to return to work within 24-48 hours. You will need to return for a follow-up examination on the day after and it is best to plan to have that day off.

When can I drive after LASIK?
In most cases you will be able to drive the day after LASIK. However, it does take some time to adjust to the change and you should use common sense and only drive when you feel confident with your vision.

How long is it until the flap is secure?
The flap settles into place immediately after surgery but it is possible for it to move during the first night. The chances of this happening are small. The flap can be lifted 3 months after surgery for retreatment by your surgeon but you are unable to move it after the first week unless you rub it quite vigorously.

Is the surgery permanent?
Yes, the surgery permanently alters the shape and focus of your cornea. This does not mean that your refractive error will not change, though. If you are going to become more short or long sighted then this may still naturally occur.

Are follow up consultations covered by the surgery fees?
The follow up visits are covered for the first month. There will be a charge for subsequent visits.

If I require further surgery do I have to pay?
Any enhancements performed within the first year incur no extra charge but after twelve months fees do apply.
