Are your glasses constantly fogging up when wearing a face mask?
For people with glasses, wearing a mask can be frustrating. Not only is it annoying when they fog up, but it also reduces vision which can make even the simplest of tasks difficult.
Health workers who wear glasses have been dealing with this issue much longer than most of us. Here are some of their top tips to prevent glasses from fogging up while wearing a mask:
- Wash your glasses with soap and water, then dry them off with a microfibre cloth. Wiping your glasses with tissues may leave lint, which attracts moisture to the lenses. Soap reduces surface tension, preventing condensation from sticking to the lenses.
- Apply a thin layer of shaving cream to the inside of your glasses, then gently wipe it off. The residual shaving cream will protect the lenses from fogging up.
- Try a de-misting spray or gel, but make sure this is compatible with your lens type or the existing coatings on your lens. You can get yours from our on-site optometrist, Lions Optics.
- Adjusting the nose bridge at the top of your surgical mask to your face, and tightening your mask ties can make a substantial difference. The tighter the fit of the mask, the more it is going to stop your breath from coming out and fogging up your glasses.
- Some health professionals use surgical tape to secure their mask down to their face. While this may not be the trendiest approach, it will reduce the gap that allows warm moist air up to the glasses.
- Another trick is slightly moistening a tissue, folding it and placing it under the top edge of the mask.
- Try contacts. If you are fed up and cannot seem to get the hang of wearing a mask with your glasses, contacts could be the best option.
- Laser vision correction could be a permanent solution for what may not be a temporary problem here in Western Australia. Why not call Lions Laser Vision on (08) 9381 0758 and speak with one of our clinical coordinators who will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
