Professor Dao-Yi Yu

Biography

Professor Dao-Yi Yu has closely worked with Professors Cringle (PhD), McAllister (retinal specialist) and Morgan (glaucoma specialist) for more than 25 years. A multi discipline team has been established including basic scientists, clinical researchers, a senior technician and PhD and masters students. More than 10 laboratories have been built for special research purposes with many custom-designed devices constructed in-house.

Long term collaborations with many prestigious universities and leading international instrument and pharmaceutical companies

The research projects are targeting the major questions in common and vision threatening diseases such as retinal vascular disease, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and glaucoma. Our aim is to develop new diagnostics and therapeutics for retinal diseases and glaucoma.
The eye is a special optical organ which performs high visual function. It requires transparent media including avascular cornea, lens and vitreous, and maintains a positive intraocular pressure. The retina has a high energy demand but has a limited blood supply. We are focusing on the fundamentally important questions specific to the eye. Major research areas in our group include retinal energy metabolism, retinal and choroidal circulation, developing new treatments of retinal vein occlusion, optic nerve tissue pressure, vascular endothelium, retinal ganglion axonal transport and cytoskeleton protein, developing new glaucoma surgery, developing intraocular laser microsurgery, and retinal pulsation study. All our projects were initiated from experimental studies at the cellular, tissue, and organ level in order to test new concepts. All successful new clinical diagnostics and therapeutics developed in our group are based on our own discoveries from long term scientific research and great team efforts.

Our group has published more than 250 papers, mostly in the higher ranked international ophthalmology journals. In addition to the ophthalmology field, we have also published in more than 17 top quality journals such as Neuroscience, Brain Research, Journal of Neuroscience Research, Journal of Neurochemistry, Am J Physiology, Diabetologia, and Microvascular Research. Our team has maintained continuous NHMRC support for >25 years and is also supported by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Vision Science and other national and international grants. We have long term collaborations with many prestigious universities and leading international instrument and pharmaceutical companies. This greatly accelerates the transfer of new discoveries to clinical ophthalmology.
