Lions Eye Bank
The Lions Eye Bank was established in 1986 by the Lions Save Sight Foundation (LSSF) and is housed at LEI. It is the only facility of its kind in WA and coordinates the collection, processing and distribution of eye tissue for transplantation. The Lions Eye Bank also maintains a waitlist of patients who require corneal graft operations.
About 100 corneas are provided by the Eye Bank for transplant each year. Corneal transplants enjoy a very high rate of success however Western Australia continues to suffer from a shortage of donated human eye tissue.
Information on corneal grafts and tissue donation can be found by downloading the following Fact Sheets:
Anyone can become an eye organ or tissue donor. Registration is as simple as completing an Australian Organ Donor Registration Form available from any Medicare office or via http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/ or by calling 1800 777 203. It is essential that upon registering as a donor that you discuss your wishes with your family as they must also give their consent at the time of donation.
