This prestigious designation recognises Professor Constable‘s significant contribution to the field of ophthalmology as a clinician, researcher and educator.
Professor Constable took up the inaugural Lions Chair of Ophthalmology at UWA in 1975 and founded the Lions Eye Institute in 1983. In 2018, he celebrated 50 years in ophthalmology, while 2025 marked his 50th year at UWA.
In his Honorary Doctorate Address, Professor Constable invokes the Japanese concept of ikigai and emphasises the importance of “doing all the little things well”, rather than measuring your self-worth against grand ambitions and major projects. You can watch the full video below:
Through his establishment of various training programs and his leadership positions on multiple international and local bodies, Professor Constable has helped establish Perth as a hub for ophthalmic studies. Over the years, his efforts have attracted talented post-graduate students from around Australia and indeed the world.
Please join us in congratulating Professor Constable on this remarkable achievement.
