Vale, Dr Ray Whitford

10 June 2026

The Lions Eye Institute is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Ray Frank Whitford, a pioneering ophthalmologist and cherished figure in Western Australian eye care. Dr Whitford passed away on 26 May 2026, aged 97 — a life richly and generously lived.

Born in Perth on 18 April 1929, Dr Whitford’s path to ophthalmology was one of dedication and purpose. He completed his medical degree at the University of Adelaide in 1953 and trained at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, before returning to Western Australia in 1961 to build a career that would span more than 40 years.

Ray served as Honorary Ophthalmologist at both Royal Perth Hospital and Fremantle Hospital. His commitment to the profession extended to the highest levels of national leadership, serving as President of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists (RACO) from 1986 to 1987.

As President, Ray championed the College’s role in education, training, and advocacy for the profession. He was a vocal advocate for fair rebates for patients undergoing eye surgery, fought to maintain high standards in training, and recognised the Lions Clubs of Australia for their vital role in establishing university chairs in ophthalmology — including here in Western Australia.

In his later years, Ray continued to give back, devoting his time to caring for his wife and, following her passing, joining colleague Dr Peter Graham in teaching ophthalmology to medical students at the University of Western Australia. It was a quiet but profound act of generosity — ensuring the next generation of eye doctors received the benefit of his lifetime of knowledge.

Ray lost his wife Nessie fourteen years ago and is survived by his five children and their families. They shared him with a profession and a community that was all the better for his selfless contribution. We are privileged that his daughter Sue also worked alongside us at the Lions Eye Institute, continuing a family connection to our mission that we hold with great warmth.

On behalf of the Lions Eye Institute, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all of Ray’s loved ones.

Vale, Dr Ray Frank Whitford.
