Johanna Du Plooy is the Director of Nursing, Safety, Quality, Risk, Infection Control and Clinical Education at the Lions Eye Institute. She joined the organisation in 2018 as Infection Control and Compliance Coordinator and was appointed Director of Nursing in 2022.
With over 15 years in senior healthcare management, Johanna brings a wealth of experience in theatre nursing, infection control, and clinical governance. Her career spans both public and private healthcare sectors across South Africa, the United Kingdom, Yemen, and Australia.
While in South Africa, Johanna contributed to a hip and knee replacement initiative at the Royal Haslar Hospital in Portsmouth, England, an innovative program aimed at reducing the National Health Service surgical waiting list. She was later invited to join a South African-led team at the University of Science and Technology Hospital in Sana’a, Yemen, where she played a key role in launching the hospital’s Infection Control Department.
Johanna relocated to Australia in 2006, taking up a position at Canberra Hospital. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing, Diploma of Management, and postgraduate qualifications in Infection Control, Clinical Governance, and Operating Room Skills.
Outside of work, Johanna enjoys spending time in nature, particularly camping and fishing with her family.
