Dr Andrea Ang recently attended the Australian Cataract and Refractive Society Meeting (AUSCRS), as committee member and speaker. The fun themes and frank exchange of scientific content and ideas made for a unique experience among international and local colleagues. Academic meetings can sometimes be a bit dry and dull, but AUSCRS spiced it up with themes and costumes for each session.
Dr Ang chaired the session on presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses with a “Death on the Nile” theme. New developments in intraocular lens designs are promising, pushing the boundaries to improve visual results while minimising side effects. There was a robust debate in the medieval themed “Head to Head” session, where Dr Ang battled with amazing colleagues Lena Beckers, Karl Stonecipher and Michael Lawless about extended depth of focus lenses. The most fun (and delicious) session to participate in was the “Is It Cake” session where refractive surgeons presented surgical videos while decorating cakes!
