New podcast explores what
parents need to know about myopia

A new two-part podcast featuring Gareth Lingham explores one of the most important questions facing parents today: how can we help protect children’s vision as rates of short-sightedness continue to rise?

Hosted by John Nguyen, Founder and Director of Luxi Health, a digital health startup, the discussion unpacks common misconceptions about myopia, the role of outdoor time, and what current research tells us about protecting children’s eye health.

The podcast forms part of Bright July, a national family movement encouraging Australian families to spend more time outdoors during winter. The campaign aims to make outdoor time more visible, intentional and shared, highlighting research that shows regular outdoor light exposure can help reduce the risk of childhood myopia, while also supporting children’s overall health, sleep and wellbeing. Families are encouraged to set outdoor time goals, share their experiences and build healthier habits throughout July.

In the podcast, Dr Gareth Lingham, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Lions Eye Institute, discusses evidence around outdoor light exposure and myopia prevention, including how much outdoor time may be needed to make a difference and why bright outdoor environments are important.

The conversation also explores how myopia is communicated to parents, the challenges families face in encouraging outdoor activity, and emerging technologies that can objectively measure a child’s light exposure throughout the day.

Recorded in July 2026, the two-part series was designed for families and aims to translate complex research into practical, everyday advice that parents can apply.
