At the ceremony, Professor Morgan was acknowledged for his significant advancement of the field of ophthalmology, through his innovative research and clinical practice. The Adjunct Professor title recognises his substantial contributions to the understanding and treatment of glaucoma and his ongoing collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Indonesia.

In her remarks, Professor Dwiana Ocviyanti emphasised;

“Professor Morgan has made extraordinary contributions to glaucoma research and treatment. By awarding him this title, we acknowledge his achievements and the invaluable exchange of knowledge he has facilitated with the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Indonesia, particularly with the Department of Ophthalmology. We are confident that his involvement will greatly enrich our academic environment and inspire future ophthalmologists.”

Professor Morgan’s collaboration with Universitas Indonesia began in 2014. Annually, he travels to Indonesia to teach the Ophthalmology Specialist Education Program (PPDS) participants and, since 2020, he has regularly delivered online lectures. His commitment extends beyond teaching; he has mentored young doctors through fellowship programs at Royal Perth Hospital and has been an active participant in research collaborations and scientific publications related to glaucoma.

During the ceremony, Professor Morgan delivered an inaugural speech titled “Taking the Present into the Future with Glaucoma Care.” He highlighted the pressing issue of glaucoma as a leading cause of blindness in Indonesia, stressing the importance of innovative detection and treatment methods.

“Glaucoma’s impact on quality of life is profound,” said Professor Morgan. “High intraocular pressure leads to optic nerve damage and irreversible vision loss. It’s crucial to innovate in our approaches to detection and treatment, to address this challenge effectively.”

One such innovation discussed was the Virna Glaucoma Drainage Device. Developed since 2011 and approved in 2019, the Virna Glaucoma Drainage Device offers an affordable and effective solution for glaucoma patients in Indonesia. This device not only enhances ophthalmologists’ skills but also improves patient access to advanced treatment. Professor Morgan emphasised the role of modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in further advancing glaucoma care.

The Virna Glaucoma Drainage Device, an outcome of successful research by Dr Virna Dwi Oktariana from Universitas Indonesia, represents a significant achievement in translating research into practical, widely available medical solutions. Collaborating with PT Rohto Laboratories Indonesia, this innovation is a testament to the productive research partnerships fostered by Professor Morgan and Universitas Indonesia.

The Adjunct Professor title is a prestigious honour awarded to distinguished individuals from international institutions who excel in their fields and contribute significantly to Universitas Indonesia’s educational and research endeavours. This recognition aims to strengthen cooperative ties between institutions and foster collaborative advancements in research and education.
