Corneal immune system in myopia

Corneal immune system in myopia

Researchers at the Lions Eye Institute and the University of Western Australia are seeking volunteer research participants for a study about the eye’s immune system that aims to identify the specific immune cell pattern in young people with myopia.

If you are aged between 12 and 25 years old, you may be eligible to join our study to help understand myopia better.

Benefits

  • A free corneal health check and measurement of your refractive error
  • A $50 gift card for each visit

Eligibility

  • Between 12-25 years of age
  • Myopia or refractive error, or mild refractive error for the control group
  • You may/ may not use atropine eye drops for myopia control.
  • You are not a frequent contact lens wearer.
  • You have otherwise healthy eyes, with no systemic diseases that are known to affect the eye.

What does this study involve?

You would be required to visit our lab on two different occasions (roughly 9-months apart) at the Lions Eye Institute (Nedlands) or Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (North) to undergo the following tests.

Each visit will take about an hour, and would include:

  • Vision test to assess your refractive error.
  • A small tear fluid sample will be collected to detect immune chemicals.
  • Images of the front surface of your eyes would be collected to examine your eye’s immune cells.
