Dr Wikstrom received his PhD in immunology from the University of Sydney in 1998. Soon after, he moved to Perth to operate and manage the flow cytometry and cell-sorting facility at the University of Western Australia. In 2002, he joined the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research to study asthma and immune responses in the respiratory tract.
Dr Wikstrom joined the Experimental Immunology Team at the Lions Eye Institute in 2008 and was later awarded the Brian King Fellowship from the Lions Save Sight Foundation.
He has worked with the Experimental Immunology Team on a wide range of projects including the immune response to virus infection in the eye, the development of autoimmunity in the retina and how to improve viral control in important clinical settings including transplantation.
