Lions Eye Bank
The Lions Eye Bank of Western Australia
The Lions Eye Bank is responsible for collecting, processing and distributing corneal and sclera tissue throughout Western Australia. To date, it has provided high quality tissue for over 3,000 corneal transplants.
With the number of Western Australians awaiting a corneal transplant gradually increasing over the last few years, there is a consistent requirement for corneas. Most people face a 9-12 month wait for donated tissue to become available. To improve donation rates families are encouraged to discuss their wishes in regards to donation and record their consent with the Australian Organ Donor Registration (AODR). Anyone can register as an eye tissue donor by telephoning 1800 777 203. Information and registration forms are also available from Medicare offices or online at www.medicareaustralia.gov.au.
