At our recent AGM Professor William (Bill) Morgan officially stepped down from his position as managing director of the Lions Eye Institute.

Board chair Tony Joyner said that Professor Morgan is an immensely valuable leader, clinician and researcher, whose contribution to the Institute over many decades had been outstanding.

“Professor Morgan has led the Institute in his current role since 2019, and he feels that now is the right time to focus more energy on a number of exciting projects that will contribute to the success and sustainability of our organisation. I am delighted that Professor Morgan will continue to work closely with the Institute as a researcher and clinician,” he said.

Positive impact

The impact that Professor Morgan has made, not just to the Institute but to patients and communities throughout the world, cannot be understated. He is a tireless advocate for mutually beneficial relationships between Western Australian and Indonesian ophthalmic professionals, and his involvement in the development the XEN® Gel Stent and Virna glaucoma drainage device has helped to save the sight of hundreds of thousands of people.

“I want to thank Professor Morgan for the significant contribution he has made to the Institute as managing director. During his tenure, he has positively changed the structure and culture of the Institute, and spearheaded a number of important initiatives, including the establishment of the UWA Optometry School, revitalisation of research, clinical and financial restructuring including the development of electronic medical records and opening of the Kimberley Eye Hub and Midland clinic. He also ably led the Institute through the extremely challenging COVID-19 period.”

Chief executive officer, Dr Glen Power, who has overseen the Institute’s clinical and corporate operations for the past three years, will now assume additional leadership responsibilities.
