Vision in Older Adults

Vision in Older Adults

Professor Allison McKendrick has long-standing research interests in understanding the perceptual changes that occur in older adults, and using that information to guide our knowledge of the neurophysiology of the aging visual system. Our current research in this area is primarily directed towards understanding the impacts of healthy aging on visual motion perception.

Some examples of motion perception tasks include:

  • measuring the minimum time required to correctly identify that an object is moving,
  • determining the threshold ability to determine the direction of a moving object,
  • being able to correctly group moving objects to understand the visual scene.

These abilities have applied relevance to daily tasks such as driving, and form key building block information for the development of new clinical tests to evaluate the impact of ocular/brain disorder on visual motion perception. This research is being conducted with collaborators from the University of Melbourne and Queensland University of Technology.
