Visual Function

Visual Function

Team leader

Professor Allison McKendrick

Visual function research encompasses how the eyes and visual system, including the areas of the brain responsible for vision, process visual information, and how these abilities impact daily activities in both healthy individuals and those with visual disorder. We are developing novel methods to assess visual performance to explore the impact of clinical conditions, and to create and evaluate new clinical diagnostic and monitoring tests.

Our methods for assessing visual function typically involve computerised tests of vision, measuring aspects such as the ability to see contrast, motion, objects, or colour. These perceptual methods are combined with information from eye and brain imaging to tell us about the health and activity of the eye and visual pathways.

Our group has specific interests in developing visual functional tests that can improve the diagnosis and management of eye conditions, that improve the understanding of visual impairment, and that can be used in clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of new treatments for a variety of conditions that affect the visual system. As such, visual function research has applied relevance to the breadth of Lions Eye Institute research focus areas.

Our current research projects are predominantly focussed on glaucoma, neurological disorders of vision, and age-related visual function. We are also collaborating with global teams interested in visual assessment for macular disorders. Our research involves both discovery research, applied research, and specific work with industry partners.
